Bird House Design Requirements |

The success of the song birds that nest in a bird house depends upon: 1) Adequate Ventilation 2) A roof with at least two inches of overhang on all sides. 3) A way to open the birdhouse from either the side, front or top. Birdhouses that open from the bottom should never be used because there is no way to inspect the nest without destroying it. 4) A construction material that provides insulation and which is free of poisons. 5) A thick entrance hole to prevent blue jays and other birds from reaching inside the nest to take the young or eggs. 6) A floor that is at least six and a half inches below the entrance hole.
